Story of an Icon:
Christ In Glory With All The Saints
#13 The final excerpt.
A booklet about the icon is being prepared and will soon be available in print. This is the final excerpt from Story of an Icon.
On the top tier of saints on the left is St. Patrick (c. mid 5th to early 6th c.). His representation on this panel is a nod to the Irish immigrants and influence in our Archdiocese. Many parishes in the Archdiocese are under his patronage. St. Patrick’s Parish in O’Neill was the second parish Fr. Reiser served as pastor from 1994-1999.
Next to St. Patrick is Servant of God Dorothy Day (1897-1980). She was a journalist and social worker and activist concerned for the poor and outcast in the New York area. She founded the Catholic Worker movement and the Catholic Worker newspaper.
To the right of Dorothy Day is St. Scholastica (c.480-543). Her representation is a recognition of the Benedictine orders who have served the Church and the Archdiocese of Omaha. The Missionary Benedictine Sisters served at the hospital in Lynch, Nebraska where Fr. Reiser was born in 1954. Their motherhouse is in Norfolk, Nebraska. Missionary Benedictine monks from Munsterschwarzach, Germany are also at the Christ the King Benedictine Priory in Schuyler, Nebraska where they promote financial support for their worldwide missions and administrate the St. Benedict Retreat Center. Benedictine monks are also as Mount Michael Abbey near Elkhorn, Nebraska where they run a high school for boys. Fr. Richard’s seminary formation was completed at St. John’s School of Theology and Seminary at St. John’s University and Benedictine Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota.
