Story of an Icon:

Christ In Glory With All The Saints

#12 The story continues.

A booklet about the icon is being prepared and will soon be available in print. In the next several bulletins, we will share excerpts from Story of an Icon.

The third level of saints from the left depicts St. Frances Cabrini (1850-1917).  She was an immigrant from Italy who became a citizen of the United States.  She founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart and established schools, orphanages and hospitals in New York, Chicago, Denver and Seattle – even in Argentina.  She would have traversed Nebraska on her way to Colorado.  She was canonized in 1946.

Next to St. Frances Cabrini is St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556).  He is the founder of the Companions of Jesus, known as the Jesuits.  He was canonized in 1622.  His depiction on this panel is in recognition of the influence of the Jesuits in the Archdiocese of Omaha.  He is the patron of St. Ignatius parish in Brunswick, Nebraska where Fr. Richard has also created an icon image of the saint. The Jesuits have provided assistance to many priests and laity in the area of spirituality and the practice of spiritual direction.

To the right of St. Ignatius is St. Rose Philippine Duchesne (1769-1852).  She was member of the Society (madams) of the Sacred Heart and an immigrant from France following the French Revolution.  She became a missionary in the Midwest, centered around the French settlement of St. Louis.  She founded schools in Missouri and among the indigenous Potawatomi people in Kansas. She is buried in St. Charles, Missouri. She was canonized in 1988.
