In today’s Gospel, Jesus continues to teach us about the
Kingdom of God by using the analogy of a Vineyard. There are
many times that the People of Israel are called God’s Vineyard
in the Hebrew Scriptures. God is constantly asked to, “protect
what your right hand (Israel) has planted.” The reason for this sentiment is that an actual vineyard was a huge investment for a family. It took years for the vines to grow large enough to produce grapes and wine. When the grapes were ready for harvest, they would often become the target of robbers. As in today’s Gospel, rich vineyard owners would lease the vineyard to tenants who sometimes ripped them off.
In a similar way, our faith life is like our own personal internal vineyard. It was purchased for us at a huge cost by the death and resurrection of Jesus. We are called to protect this inheritance and pass it on to the next generation. This requires us adults to not only take our kids to Mass and send them to religious instruction, but to constantly renew our faith through worship and by continuing to learn about our faith as an adult. This adult formation is the focus of our parish staff in the years to come. We have several opportunities for this coming up. On October 7th, there will be a Rosary Procession at Mary Our Queen starting at 7 P.M. On October 11th, there will be a Pet Blessing at St. John Vianney at 1 P.M. On October 14, there will be a Faith and Fellowship Night with the theme, “Beginning with the Bible,” at 7 P.M. at Mary Our Queen.
Don’t be the one to squander your inheritance of God’s Vineyard. The fine wine of faith is, I promise you, even better than the wine Fr. Lim collects.
